Waiting on a Train

Main Shot

The title of this one pretty much says it. The only really important note here is that while I often see interesting things on the road I am always careful to STOP THE CAR before I take a picture. I don't want anyone to be harmed in the making of this blog.

Self Portrait with My New 7D

Main Shot

I was so excited to get my new Canon 7D! It is really an amazing tool and I can't wait to jump in and see what it can do.
To help in bonding our new relationship we did a photo shoot together.

A Big Lesson From a Small Interaction

Main Shot

This is Salt Lake Tribune Photographer Scott Sommerdorf. He taught me something pretty profound while I sat by him at the NCAA Elite 8. He was perched in the corner of the arena above the tunnel, quite a ways away from the contingent of photographers squatting down on the baseline under that basket. I made an offhand remark as I sat down, something like "What did you do to get banished clear up here?". I assumed there weren't enough places for him to be down with the privileged but that's odd since he's from the home-town newspaper. He answered that he had to beg them to be up there. I thought it was pretty odd that he'd WANT to be up away from the action when every other photographer was down close getting in the heat of the action.
I hope I will remember his answer for a long time. He said, "All of those photographers will get basically the exact same shot. Some will time it better than others but for better or worse, mine will be different."
Amen, and thank you Scott.
He was also a really good guy. Check out some of his images from the tournament at the Salt Lake Tribune's site.

This is one of those shots I took when I was simply bored. For your information, I was NOT moving while composing it.

Vintage Camera

Main Shot

I love old cameras. This is an old non-functioning Ansco Pronto from the 50's. I love the look of it. It's just beautiful.

The place will remain unnamed but I didn't expect to find an interesting image there.

3 + 5 = Me

Here I am, 35 years after birth.
A little fact: My dad actually missed my birth because he was filling out paperwork and I was so excited about coming into the world I couldn't wait. Patience has been a tough thing for me ever since.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Trees in Southern Utah near the Nevada and Arizona borders. I like to go out there and shoot. There's something about deserts that are ponderous.

Landscape at Coke World

We are looking out across the barren desert of Coke memorabilia at Coke World in Vegas.
I usually get the international sample tray which is 16 Coke drinks from around the world but we decided to forgo this time. I got their St. Patrick's special which was an Irish Cream flavored Coke with vanilla ice cream and Oreo cookie crumbs. It was good.

More and more I am shooting the full 5 mp image with the built-in Cliq camera and importing into vignette. It allows for more options when I'm in a hurry so I can capture one photo and play with variations later instead of shooting the variations up front. It's definitely more fun to do the latter but faster to get the one shot if I don't have much time at the time of shooting.

Vegas Decor

A huge head from the Orleans Hotel and Casino where my parents and brother's family are staying for the MWC basketball tournament. The buffet there was pretty good but the gelato was music to my taste buds!

Medieval Grog...or a Diet Pepsi

Parenting means forking out $150 for a $10 dinner then sitting back and watching the face of a two-year-old light up with wonder cheering for kings and wizards and realizing it was worth every penny.

The oldest building on the Las Vegas strip, The Little Chapel of the West. 14 years ago, our friends Andrea and John got married in this chapel. We went back yesterday to get the wedding photos they never got.

Last Sliver of Sun Near Nephi

Main Shot

On the road down to Las Vegas for WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) we caught the last light on the Wasatch Mountains, just below Nephi, Utah. It was really, really cold. The snow was new and beautiful. I love moments like this. I wish I could have pulled out my real camera but we were way behind and didn't have too much picture taking time.
The next week or so of the One-a-Day project will be coming to you from lovely Las Vegas, Nevada.
(I tweaked the contrast, saturation, and sharpness just a bit in PicSayPro. I actually think I oversharpened, now that I look at it.)

Road Hog

Main Shot

This guy just about killed me with his crazy driving!
(Yes, I understand the irony of pulling my phone out on the freeway to gain sweet photographic vindication for irresponsible driving.) It just happened to look cool with the overpass overhead. I like how everything leads you to the left off the road where he was apparently trying to plant me.
No retouching whatsoever. (At least I didn't take it then play with it all on the road.)

Nailed it

I am a huge fan of Psych on USA Network. If you have seen it, you may recognize the title of this photo from Shawn's vernacular. If you haven't checked it out, you are missing all the fun.
